The University of Texas at El Paso Engine #1 at its arrival to Texas Western College (now UTEP)

In 1960, the locomotive was donated to the University by the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad and moved to its new home adjacent to the Centennial Museum on the University campus.

Several reasons existed for the donation of Locomotive No. 1 to the University. Among them are:

  • • the shared mining heritage between the Locomotive and the University
  • • Locomotive No. 1 ran all the way into El Paso after the formation of the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad
  • • located at the University, Locomotive No. 1 would be close to the railroad tracks on which it had run during operation

At the dedication ceremony, the air horn sounded these two final signals:

  • • "Have cleared and am passing on"
  • • "I understand and will carry on"

From 1960 to 2002, Locomotive No. 1 was a landmark on the UTEP campus.
