The University of Texas at El Paso Undergraduate Learning Center

The Undergraduate Learning Center opened its doors to students in 1998 with a seating capacity of over 2,000. At 175,000 square feet, it houses six auditoriums, five computer classrooms, distance and collaborative learning suites, as well as several smaller classrooms and offices. When it opened, the UGLC was the first fully technological university classroom building in the United States. Its design exemplifies UTEP's foresight on the future with wireless connectivity in every classroom, interactive podiums, podcasting availability, hundreds of computers and even more data ports.

In keeping with the campus’ Bhutanese architectural theme, the UGLC contains sculptures and a tapestry from the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. A small structure found outside the main entrance, called a Stupa or chorton, symbolizes the path to enlightenment.

UTEP commissioned the tapestry from a government workshop in Bhutan. The tapestry has embroidered at its center, a flaming blue sword, which symbolizes cutting the bonds of ignorance.
