The University of Texas at El Paso The return of the bell clapper

News reports of the locomotive's pending restoration reached Mr. Robert Gray (right) of Fort Davis, Texas. He had been keeper of the bell clapper for many years. The bell clapper had been removed, according to local lore, because students liked to ring the locomotive bell in the middle of the night as a prank on those in neighboring dormitories. After the construction of the locomotive's protective structure, no one thought to reinstall the clapper. The bell clapper was restored to the Museum's collection on June 20, 2002. Scott Cutler, Curator of Collections and Exhibits is in the background.
